Information about our Swedish partners

The city of Uppsala is the fourth largest municipality in Sweden with 180,000 residents.  Perhaps best known for its 15th Century university and the ancient cathedral, Uppsala also has an agricultural university.

Uppsala is located 70 kilometres north of the Swedish capital Stockholm in the province of Uppland. Arlanda international airport is located about 30 kilometres from Uppsala. The city offers visitors beautiful surroundings with for example Lake Mälaren, old castles and other historical places.

The Making the Invisible partner organisation is Uppsala Care and Education Board, UVB, this is part of the local authority with about 10,000 employees, 400 of whom work as part of the Individual and Family Care division. The division is responsible for social services including advice, care and treatment for children and young people at risk of abuse and neglect and also for people who need treatment and support for social problems of different kinds including drug problems. The board is also responsible for giving support and help to women and their children who are exposed to domestic violence, for example the Individual and Family Care division has a sheltered house for women and their children.

Uppsala has established a reference group for the Making the Invisible project with participants from different organisations such as Barnombudsmannen, the Swedish National Centre for knowledge on men’s violence against women, and women’s voluntary organisations. The purpose is to gain input,  views and ideas from agencies other than social services, which are in contact with these women and children.
