Information about our UK partners
Surrey is located in South East England with a total population of 1.1 million. It is ranked 35th largest in terms of area and 13th largest in terms of population density. The county borders Greater London, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire. It is divided into 11 boroughs and districts, which are: Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley and Woking.
Surrey is a prosperous county with a service based economy closely tied to that of London. Statistically the area is more affluent than other parts of the UK. The largest town is Guildford, which is the county town for Surrey. It is known for its numerous shops and department stores, university, cathedral and its thriving commerce.
Surrey County Council with 25,961 employees is responsible for the management and direct delivery of services to residents of Surrey. In common with all public authorities in the United Kingdom, it sets its own annual budget, drawing down money from national government as part of an ‘annual settlement’ arrangement and raising local taxes to meet its stated service obligations. It also attracts special project funding.
Surrey Community Safety Unit works with all agencies engaged in community safety, crime and disorder reduction and domestic abuse in Surrey. Principally these are the County Council, Surrey Police, the Borough and District Councils, Surrey Probation Service, Primary Health Care Trusts, Fire and Rescue Service, the Drug Action Team, the Youth Offending Team, Indpendent Domestic Abuse service providers and other voluntary sector agencies.
